Correa’s missile wins it for Atleti

Screamer from the Argentinian gives Atlético a 1-0 win over Valencia in an intense game, with few chances

A ‘golazo‘ from Ángel Correa gave Atlético de Madrid a victory in an intense duel, one in which goal-scoring chances were few and far between, but one that was played sportingly. Valencia, who looked well-organised from the start, tried to go forward in the dying minutes, but did not manage to give Oblak any serious problems.

On an especially cold night at the Metropolitano, Simeone set up his team to apply intense pressure and make it difficult for Valencia to play out, to which Marcelino’s side responded with patience, and Parejo and Kondogbia were once again very solid in midfield. The best chance of the first half fell to the hosts. As a corner came across, Diego Costa sent in a thumping header that forced Neto to make the save of the night. There were not many other saves made all evening, but that takes nothing away from how impressive this one was.

The real spark of the night, though, came from Correa. The Argentinian, who is capable of missing the easiest of chances, surprised Neto with a missile that flew into the top right-hand corner. With half an hour left on the clock, Valencia tried to react. Atlético, who had lost both of their centre-backs, Godín and Savic, through injury, resisted until the end and took possession at the end to run down the clock.
