Courtois: “My heart is in Madrid, I’ll return some day”

The Belgian goalkeeper’s contract with Chelsea expires in 2019 and, although he intends to sign a new deal with the London club, Real Madrid are keeping an eye on his situation

Thibaut Courtois’ contract with Chelsea is up in 2019, and Europe’s top clubs are obviously keeping an eye on his situation, as the Belgian is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in the world. The former Atlético de Madrid ‘keeper spoke to Sport Foot Magazine and did not duck questions about his situation with the West London club or the possible interest Real Madrid have in him.

Firstly, Courtois made it clear that he is happy at Chelsea, and that his intention is to stay at the club: “We agreed to meet again in February [to discuss a contract extension] because the club had more urgent matters to deal with in January. No pressure, I have a contract until 2019. Normally, there will be no problems, I will sign a new deal. I’m happy here and I see we are going in the right direction to win titles“, he stated.

He did not, though, rule out the possibility of signing for Real Madrid: “My personal situation is linked to the city of Madrid. My two children live there with their mother. My heart is in Madrid. It is logical and understandable.” The Belgian, though, said that he did not know of any real interest on the part of the Blancos: “If they want me, they have to contact Chelsea. We will see. But they never have. The truth is that one day I will return to Madrid. If Madrid are really interested, my personal situation could affect any decision, yes. The family aspect is priceless. I repeat, though, that for the moment, I’m busy talking with Chelsea with a view to renewing my contract with them”, he concluded.
