Atlético win, with the Hispano-Brazilian starting, scoring and getting sent off 20 minutes before time

With Diego Costa, the new King of the Wanda Metropolitano, in the starting XI, Atlético lined up against Getafe for a game that was marked by frustration, especially in the first half. In the latter stages of the first 45, nerves became frayed as the referee whipped out yellow card after yellow card. Munuera Montero showed as many as eleven yellow cards over the 90 minutes of a game that the Rojiblancos ended up winning 2-0.

On 18 minutes, a neat individual move by Griezmann led to Correa being on his own with only Emiliano to beat. The forward did not miss his chance, and with a shot across the ‘keeper to the far corner put his team ahead. From then on, the game turned scrappy and the constant niggling fouls and interruptions put both teams on edge while the crowd became incensed at what they saw as the referee’s one-sidedness when it came to reaching for his cards.

After the break, things calmed down a bit, and it was possible to see a bit of football again, with Atlético far superior once they had managed to impose a certain rhythm to the game. The turning point came when Simeone’s side doubled their lead but were reduced to ten men.

A great pass from Vrsaljko, after speeding down the right flank practically unchallenged, was turned in perfectly by Diego Costa, who had been huge throughout the game. The forward, however, already on a yellow card for elbowing an opponent, leapt over the advertising hoardings and celebrated the strike with the fans behind the goal. The referee showed him a second yellow card, then the red, and his celebration was cut short. Atlético were now a man down, with 20 minutes still to go, but that did not stop them from bossing the game still.

Diego Costa’s arrival is giving Atlético de Madrid a breath of fresh air, and he has now made it two goals in two appearances. With this win, the Rojiblancos get a tighter grip on second place and are, for the moment at least, now just six points behind Barcelona.
