Godín: “Bear with me, I can’t smile much!”

Atlético centre-back reappears on social media after undergoing maxillofacial surgery and thanks fans for their support while he recovers from the loss of three teeth

Diego Godín is now recovering at home after the Valencia goalkeeper, Neto, clattered him in Sunday’s game at the Metropolitano. The collision knocked out three of his teeth and he required maxillofacial surgery afterwards, as he suffered “a dentoalveolar fracture to three of his maxilla”, according to the Atlético website. Comfortably seated on his sofa, he has sent out a message thanking the thousands of fans who have shown him support and encouragement over the last three days. Godín’s message read: “Thank you very much everyone for the messages of support and affection!! In a few days I’ll be back on the pitch! Bear with me, I can’t smile much!”

The Atlético de Madrid defender is expected to be out for three weeks, unless there are any complications, but will continue training during that time, separately from the rest of the squad.
