Ronaldo’s not missing out on the World Cup

The European champions will not miss out on the next World Cup, as had been feared. Portugal got it right and beat a Switzerland side who were not up to the task in Lisbon. Portugal needed to win, as a draw would have seen the Swiss go through, and they managed it with an own goal from Djourou and a strike from André Silva. It was not Cristiano Ronaldo’s best game ever, the Madrid forward was not particularly good on the ball all night.

Portugal dominated the early stages, having a lot of the ball but creating few chances. Switzerland slowly settled into the game but posed little threat to Rui Patricio’s area. Half an hour had gone by before the first real chance came, but when it did it was a good one: Bernardo Silva struck a vicious left-footed shot that Sommer was equal to.

The opener came from a rather lucky move, a centre that Sommer and João Mario both challenged for, but that hit Djourou and bounced off him into the net.

Going into the second half, Switzerland needed to step up a gear or two, but showed that they were not up to it. Portugal took advantage of the situation. Ronaldo gave them a warning with a shot from the edge of the area, and a couple of minutes later André Silva finished off a great team move, after being fed in by Bernardo Silva.
